Pima College has been a perennial power in the ACCAC led by Coach Todd Holthaus. It is no surprise that Pima has been a factory for producing top notch talent. One of the players who made an impact for the Aztecs was Sophomore Guard Priscila Varela. Varela prepped at Mesquite High School before signing with Pima. After a solide sophomore campaing, Varela commits to Idaho State University.

At Pima, Varela averaged 8 points/game, 3.4 rebounds/game, 1.9 assist/game, and .8 steals a game. Her stats may not jump out at you however she competed in one of the toughest JUCO conferences in the country. When I first saw her play as a senior, she displayed Olympic type athleticism, intensity and aggression. I am not surprised by her signing with a Division 1 University after her JUCO career.

Her attributes which stood out to me include a relentless motor, slashing ability, and being a stout defender. Varela plays within her role and executes it at a high level. Her story is living proof that you don’t have to average video game type scoring stats to play at the highest level. I truly believe she is capable of putting up incredible numbers, but excels in executing her individual role to help her team win. Congratulations to Priscila and I am excited for her next chapter.
