The Gems In The Gym continues to impact women’s basketball with the 18th Annual Fresh Faces: Myles McGowan Coaches Classic. The event is named after Gems In The Gym Founder Kameo Williams’ Godson Myles McGowan who passed away battling cancer.
The event is a compilation of mini events building into a unique basketball and life experience. Athletes participating in the event this year received tours of San Jose State University and University of California at Berkeley. In the tours, the athletes got to meet the coaching staff from both programs and received information on the college recruiting process and a look at the expectations of the athletes in the current college programs.
On the 2nd and 3rd Day, future middle school club teams play in a showcase competing for invites for next year’s Fresh Faces Event. The event is wrapped up with games from the current (2028) class teams, alumni games, and coaches goodwill game. This event provides exposure from some of the top women’s basketball scouts and media from across the country to include: Kenneth Pannell (ESPN HoopGurlz, McDonald’s All American Committee), Kameo Williams (Gems In The Gym), Sorden Davis (FlyOnTheWallWBB), Prentice Beverly (BallnPrep), Harold Abend (Cal-Hi Sports, Prep2Prep) and George Courtney (GC3 Hoops, Vizion Sports Network).
It is apparent that Kam and his staff work hard to create opportunities for student athletes in attendance. More importantly this event memorializes his Godson Myles to provide hope and support to adolescents battling cancer. I am honored to be involved with this event as it is first class. Stay tuned for evaluations of the top performers.
