Some basketball events are measured by wins, losses, rankings, and scholarship offers. Others leave an impact that extends far beyond the final buzzer.
The Gems In The Gym Fresh Faces Myles McGowan Classic, organized by Kameo Williams and his dedicated team, is one of those special events. It has become a meaningful gathering that blesses student-athletes, families, coaches, evaluators, photographers, media members, and basketball professionals in more ways than can be counted.
Fresh Faces provides student-athletes with an opportunity to compete, gain valuable exposure, build their personal brands, and learn more about the college recruiting process. Parents receive valuable education and guidance as they help their children navigate a basketball journey that can often feel confusing or overwhelming.
The event also creates opportunities for community outreach, professional networking, scholarships, relationship-building, and genuine acts of love and service.
However, the heart of the event is much bigger than basketball.
Fresh Faces continues to honor and preserve the legacy of Kameo’s godson, Myles McGowan. Every player who steps onto the court, every relationship that is formed, and every opportunity created helps keep Myles’ memory alive.
That purpose can be felt throughout the event.
It is one of the main reasons I always make sure to keep my calendar open so I can attend Fresh Faces annually.
My relationship with the event began five years ago when Kameo extended an invitation for me to attend and help provide exposure, evaluations, and athlete write-ups. At the time, I was continuing to establish myself as a basketball evaluator and looking for opportunities to demonstrate my ability to identify and promote talent.
Kameo and the Fresh Faces platform gave me that opportunity.
I have attended basketball tournaments, showcases, camps, and exposure events across the country, but Fresh Faces is different. It is a unique event that sincerely pours into everyone involved.
The event does not only create opportunities for the athletes competing on the court. It also opens doors for people who are trying to find their place within the basketball industry.
I consider Kameo to be one of the godfathers of women’s grassroots basketball. His willingness to create opportunities for others has helped countless people grow, develop, and become more connected within the game.
Fresh Faces played an important role in my own journey.
After attending my first event five years ago, I was able to show people around the country that I had the ability to evaluate talent at a national level. The platform allowed me to gain credibility, build momentum, and eventually elevate GC3 Hoops into the national basketball space.
In many ways, Fresh Faces helped my career as a basketball scout skyrocket.
Because of this event, I have also been able to network and develop relationships with some of the most respected professionals in the basketball industry. That includes Kenneth “KP” Pannell of ESPN, Prentice Beverly of BallNPrep, photographer Sal Velazquez of Airama Sports Photography, Harold Abend of Cal-Hi Sports, and numerous college coaches, program directors, evaluators, and media professionals.
Those relationships have helped me grow professionally, but they have also developed into genuine friendships built through a shared love for basketball and a commitment to helping young people.
That is what makes Fresh Faces so meaningful.
It serves as a reminder that success in this industry should not only be about climbing to the top. It should also be about reaching back, opening doors, sharing knowledge, and sending the elevator back down for the next person.
Kameo did that for me.
He provided a platform for someone who was still building his name in the business. He gave me an opportunity to demonstrate my abilities, connect with respected professionals, and grow within the basketball community.
For that, I will always be thankful.
There are countless talented athletes, aspiring scouts, photographers, coaches, media members, and basketball professionals who are simply waiting for someone to believe in them and provide an opportunity. Fresh Faces has consistently created those opportunities while remaining grounded in service, community, and love.
I sincerely wish there were more ways to spread the word, bring additional supporters into the gym, and help more people understand the importance of this movement.
Supporting Fresh Faces means more than attending another basketball event.
It means supporting student-athletes as they pursue their dreams. It means helping families become more educated about recruiting. It means creating scholarships and opportunities. It means connecting professionals throughout the basketball industry. It means strengthening the community.
Most importantly, it means continuing to honor the life and legacy of Myles McGowan.
I am extremely thankful and grateful for everything Kameo Williams, his team, and the Fresh Faces platform have done for me and so many others.
This event has blessed my life, helped elevate my career, and connected me with people who have become an important part of my basketball journey.
