In the highly anticipated championship game of the prestigious high school girls basketball tournament (Nike TOC Vincent Cannizzaro Bracket), the No. 3 ranked Archbishop Mitty from San Jose, California, emerged victorious with a thrilling 73-72 win over the top-ranked Long Island Lutheran from Brookville, New York. The standout player of the game, McKenna Woliczko, who was also named the Tournament MVP, led the charge for Mitty with an impressive 19 points.
Mitty, boasting an undefeated record of 7-0, flexed their defensive strength in the final moments of the game. With the pressure mounting, they managed to stifle Long Island Lutheran’s offense, ultimately forcing a desperate shot from Syla Swords that fell short.
Contributing to Mitty’s win, Morgan Cheli, a UConn commit, displayed her impressive skill set by adding 17 points. Additionally, Elana Weisman made a valuable contribution with 11 points.
This championship should help skyrocket Mitty to the top of National polls as they have the resume on their record.
Cheli and Woliczko are my favorite duo in the country as both are very difficult to contain. Cheli is a three level scorer with a high basketball IQ. She can hurt opponents on both ends of the floor as she utilizes her IQ, size, athleticism to be steps ahead of the competition. I have evaluated Woliczko since seeing her at the Gems in the Gym: Myles McGowan Classic. Woliczko is an elite high major prospect who protects the paint with her shot blocking ability and cleans the glass on both ends of the floor. Offensively she is an elite scorer from the inside and midrange. She is a future lottery pick as what sets her apart is her work ethic, fundamentals, and motor. Congratulations to Archbishop Mitty!
