This year’s event brought together an impressive amount of Polynesian talent and gave these athletes an opportunity to showcase their abilities on a national stage.

Throughout the event, Kalei Douglas, Jezrael Kealoha, Reisha Mitchell, Deyjah Green, and Leila Puaauli each showed that they could not only compete at this level — they could produce.

Kalei, Jezrael, Reisha, Deyjah, and Leila are part of a growing generation showing that Polynesian athletes can excel on the basketball court at an extremely high level.

They are guards. They are scorers. They are defenders. They are playmakers. They are competitors.

And eventually, some of the young Pasifika athletes coming through platforms like Gems In The Gym could become scholarship college basketball players and potentially much more.

Every time one of these athletes performs well on a national stage, another young girl watching from Hawaiʻi, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, Guam, or throughout the Pasifika community gets another example of what is possible.

Exposure is not simply about putting a camera in a gym. True exposure is placing talented athletes in environments where they can compete against quality competition, be seen by evaluators, build relationships, and prove themselves.
