Over the holiday break, the 7th Annual Central Arizona Holiday Classic Boys Basketball Tournament tipped off at Casa Grande Union High School. This event has a special place in my heart since it is my first regular season basketball tournament that I was able to start and continue to keep going year after year.

In the past, teams from throughout the state of Arizona participated as well as out of state opponents from the states of Colorado, Nebraska, and Hawaii. This year’s event hosted 12 teams to include Casa Grande Union, Vista Grande, Maricopa, Desert Sunrise, NFL Yet Academy, Desert View, Walden Grove, Eastmark, Tempe, Marcos de Niza, Sunnyside, and Poston Butte. For the first time in tournament history, the Casa Grande Union Cougars won the championship game over the Eastmark Firebirds.

Overall the event was loaded with under the radar talent. Here are the prospects who caught my attention:

Lyle Austin 6-1 Guard 2025 Vista Grande

Austin is a versatile and dynamic playmaker, often described as a “Swiss Army knife” for his ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game. Whether it’s making critical plays on offense, defense, or special teams, he consistently steps up to give his team an edge. The Spartans will depend heavily on his knack for delivering game-changing moments as they push for a playoff berth. His exceptional athleticism, relentless motor, and innate playmaking ability make him a cornerstone of their success.

Nasir Cobbs 5-10 Guard 2025 Tempe

Cobbs is an explosive and highly athletic playmaker who excels at both ends of the court. On defense, he applies relentless pressure to opposing guards, disrupting their rhythm and forcing turnovers with his quick hands and sharp instincts. Once he secures possession, Cobbs transitions seamlessly to offense, using his speed and agility to push the tempo and capitalize on fast-break opportunities. His ability to turn defense into instant offense makes him a constant threat and a key asset to his team’s success.

Dewayne Haygood 6-6 Forward 2025 Casa Grande Union

Haygood is a dominant presence in the paint, anchoring his team with his imposing rim protection, tenacious rebounding, and reliable scoring touch that extends from close range to the mid-range. His ability to control the interior on both ends of the floor makes him a crucial asset for the Cougars. Beyond his physicality and skillset, Haygood plays a complementary role that enhances the performance of his teammates, embodying the qualities of a “glue player” who brings cohesion and balance to the team. His consistent contributions will be instrumental in the Cougars’ pursuit of a deep postseason run.

Gary Hoxie 6-6 Forward 2025 Maricopa

Hoxie serves as Maricopa’s defensive anchor and primary rim protector, using his size and presence to deter opposing offenses in the paint. In addition to his shot-blocking prowess, he is an effective rebounder who consistently secures second chances for his team on both ends of the floor. Hoxie also contributes as a reliable rim runner, creating opportunities in transition and finishing plays with solid athleticism. Maricopa, emerging as a dark horse contender in the competitive 5A Sonoran Region, will lean on Hoxie’s interior dominance as they aim to make a statement this season. Keep an eye on this team—they could surprise many.

Gavin Lewis 6-0 Guard 2026 Casa Grande Union

Lewis has shown remarkable growth in his game since the fall, catching my attention with his all-around development and impact on the court. The Cougars will look to him as a key contributor, relying on his exceptional playmaking ability, clutch shooting in critical moments, and defensive versatility. What sets Lewis apart is his scoring prowess across all three levels—whether it’s attacking the rim, pulling up in the mid-range, or knocking down shots from beyond the arc. His transformation makes him arguably the most improved player in the state, and his dynamic style of play makes him an electrifying talent to watch this season.

Dutch Martinez 6-0 Guard 2025 Poston Butte

Martinez of the Broncos is a skilled and crafty scorer with the ability to excel at all three levels—finishing at the rim, hitting mid-range jumpers, and knocking down shots from beyond the arc. His leadership qualities stand out, as he consistently steps up to do whatever it takes to keep his team competitive in tough matchups. Martinez’s versatility and willingness to adapt make him a valuable asset on the court. For smaller colleges seeking a reliable and dynamic combo guard, Martinez would be a solid addition. With his tremendous potential and room for growth, he’s a player to watch as he continues to elevate his game.

Sa’veon McCrimon 5-9 Guard 2025 Tempe

McCrimon is a dynamic playmaker who excels on both ends of the court, particularly on defense, where his athleticism and quickness allow him to disrupt opposing offenses effectively. Offensively, he leverages his agility to create opportunities, penetrate defenses, and attack the rim with confidence. Paired with Cobbs, Tempe boasts an electrifying backcourt duo that forms a fast-paced, high-impact 1-2 punch capable of catching unprepared teams off guard. McCrimon’s versatility as a guard—able to seamlessly transition between point guard and shooting guard roles—makes him an appealing prospect for small colleges seeking a quick, athletic player who can lead the offense and contribute as a reliable scorer.

Manual Moreno 6-0 Guard 2025 Sunnyside

Moreno is a skilled and reliable combo guard known for his strong leadership qualities and balanced, all-around game. His ability to contribute effectively on both offense and defense sets him apart as a key player. Offensively, Moreno shines with his scoring versatility, consistently producing points from all three levels—at the rim, mid-range, and beyond the arc. His toughness and relentless competitive spirit make him a player who rises to the occasion in every game, setting the tone for his team. As one of the cornerstone players for the Blue Devils this season, Moreno’s impact extends beyond individual stats, providing the leadership and consistency that drive the team’s success.

James Steward 6-8 Forward 2025 Marcos de Niza

Steward is an exceptional wing prospect with a strong physical presence and skill set that immediately stands out. Recently earning an offer from Northern Arizona University, his recruitment momentum is expected to grow significantly as the Spring season approaches. Steward’s athleticism allows him to defend multiple positions effectively, both on the perimeter and in the paint, showcasing his versatility on the court. Offensively, he excels as a finisher around the rim and has a dependable mid-range scoring game that adds another dimension to his play. Despite often playing out of his natural position, Steward continues to make an impact with his rebounding ability and rim protection, proving his adaptability and resilience. With his well-rounded skill set and significant potential for growth, Steward is a strong mid-major prospect with the tools to make a substantial impact at the collegiate level.

Kylend Suou 5-9 Guard 2025 Maricopa

Suou is a dynamic and agile playmaker known for his quickness and athleticism, making him a standout on both ends of the court. Offensively, he excels as a slasher, consistently breaking down defenses with his explosive drives to the basket and creating scoring opportunities for himself and his teammates. Defensively, Suou’s relentless energy and scrappy play make him a disruptive force, often pressuring opponents into turnovers and mistakes. His competitive spirit and ability to impact the game in multiple ways make him an excellent prospect for small colleges seeking a quick, athletic guard who thrives in a fast-paced style of play and embraces the challenge of slashing through defenses.

Rhys Walcott 6-0 Guard 2025 Eastmark

Walcott’s game can best be described as smooth and poised, marked by a blend of skill and control that makes him stand out on the court. His excellent ball-handling and high basketball IQ allow him to manage the offense effectively, making smart decisions and setting up his teammates. On defense, he’s equally impressive, using his positioning and anticipation to disrupt opposing plays. Offensively, Walcott is a versatile scorer, capable of contributing from all three levels—driving to the rim, knocking down mid-range shots, and hitting from beyond the arc. What stands out most about his game is his steady demeanor; he never gets too caught up in the highs or lows, staying composed and focused throughout the game. Walcott’s consistent and well-rounded play has been instrumental to the Firebirds’ success this season. One of my favorite under-the-radar point guards in the state, he’s a quietly dominant force who continues to make an impact.

Aveon Williams 6-7 Forward 2026 Casa Grande Union

Williams is a physical marvel, standing at 6’7″ and possessing a build reminiscent of a defensive lineman. However, don’t be deceived by his imposing size—his game demonstrates that he is more than capable of playing on the wing. His remarkable athleticism and quickness, especially for someone of his stature, make him a matchup nightmare for defenders. He has the ability to stretch the floor and score effectively from all three levels—whether attacking the rim, hitting mid-range shots, or knocking down three-pointers. His toughness allows him to battle down low, where he can finish strong in the paint. On defense, Williams is equally impactful, showcasing impressive rebounding skills and shot-blocking ability that help anchor his team. Though he’s already committed to playing Division I football, Williams’ exceptional dual-sport talent will make him a highly sought-after recruit for both basketball and football at the next level, offering immense potential in either sport.
